Too many tv channels?
tv channels
Can there ever be too many tv channels? Whether you have satellite TV or just basic cable TV, it is clear that the best original programming is no longer made by the major broadcast networks. With a few exceptions, clearly the best shows of the past ten or fifteen years have not been on FOX, NBC or ABC (or CBS or the CW either, for that matter). In this brave new technological world, who are the winners? A few stations have clearly risen significantly above the rest.
To begin with, no discussion of original programming in the 90s and early 2000s could fail to mention HBO. HBO has been, as their ads themselves state, completely groundbreaking. (Well they would, wouldn’t they!) Their programming schedule is essentially a list of some of the best TV shows of the past fifteen years: The Sopranos, Sex and the City, Entourage, Big Love, Six Feet Under, and more recently True Blood are just a few of the critically acclaimed popular successes of HBO. While Showtime has been scrambling to keep up by offering its own programs such as The Tudors, clearly HBO comes out on top. Even better, those with live tv online can have near constant access to their favorite shows by way of the many HBO stations the service offers.
After HBO, another clear winner is Comedy Central. This station first broke through with the cartoon South Park, which remains a hit to this day (and which can actually be seen in syndication on the broadcast stations, ironically enough). Similarly, The Daily Show is one of the most decorated shows on TV right now, and The Colbert Report is following closely on its heels. Not to be forgotten either is the short-lived but brilliant Chappelle Show.
MTV is another channel which has experienced tremendous success at the expense of the broadcast networks with its constant focus on the music world. Although today The Real World has devolved into a show about little more than twentysomethings getting drunk and hooking up, it cannot be forgotten how revolutionary the show was when it first came out. In particular, in showing a gay man who was HIV positive, it changed the way much of the country’s youth viewed homosexuality and has likely done more to further gay rights than any other show in history. More recently, MTV is experiencing a rebirth with the tremendous popularity of The Jersey Shore, which in many ways is the culmination of the reality TV craze The Real World once spawned.
In the past five or six years as well, USA has gone from being little more than a place to watch perpetual Law & Order reruns to a worthwhile station in its own right. Monk, Psyche, Royal Pains and White Collar are just a few of the award-winning original programs found on the channel.
CNN and ESPN have also revolutionized the way Americans watch TV. While people used to have to wait for the nightly news to find out what had happened that day. With CNN and the BBC, people can tune in at any time and instantly learn about updates around the world. Similarly, what CNN has done for the world of news ESPN has done for the world of sports. Via ESPN2 and ESPN3, as well, fans can also follow sports that might be considered more obscure than baseball or football but which still have their own rabid following, thereby tremendously expanding peoples’ access to this most beloved of pastimes.
All these channels and some 3,500 more are available for live tv online customers who have downloaded the software package to provide these channels on their pc.
